Wonderview in bloom

White flowers against green leaves, grass and a blue sky.

Just a very quick interlude to show off some of the flowers springing into life around Wonderview. Over the nearly six years of owning this land, we’ve been steadily working on it, trying to turn it from a patch of scraggly grass, surrounded by acres of stunning natural forest and country fields, to a verdant, thriving, somewhat more refined garden, surrounded by acres of stunning natural forest and country fields. And we’re mostly succeeding (bar the still present scraggly grass, which is honestly the bane of our lives) but it’s definitely been slow going. So I am pretty proud of these tiny moments of floral life currently happening around the place.

This is the first year we’ve been able to grow flowers; in the past we were never here frequently enough or regularly enough to be able to give them the water and care they needed. It’s a learning curve! But a fun one.

These white flowers are coming out on some of the grasses that grow in the beds out the back. Aren’t they pretty?!
Black Magic tulips growing in a black pot.
Tulips! These are on the east deck, by the entrance. I also planted ranunculus and anemones, which are yet to come up. I expected these tulips would grow taller before blooming but apparently not…also, the flowers opened really quickly. Any tulip experts out there with tips for me?

These funny little guys are hydrangeas! I know they’re slightly forlorn looking around the leaves but they seem to be doing well regardless, with lots of new leaf growth around the bottom and flower buds already coming out on a number of them. We have these planted in front of the parking area and leading down an edge of the front lawn. They’re going to be glorious when they’ve grown up a bit…I can’t wait. Bringing some New England energy to our very Aotearoa scenery!

Griselinia by the parking area. Eventually it’ll grow and form a hedge and the cars will be hidden behind it when you’re looking back from the house…

Griselinia doing the hedge thing. We planted these only a couple of years ago, and they were smaller than the ones in the image above. We get lots of rain and lots of strong sun up here; it doesn’t take long!

Also, you can see we’ve got the outdoor furniture out, although cushions are still in storage most of the time. But we’re getting ready for summer up here and that is very exciting!
