Hello hello! We are several weeks back from skiing and I’m hoping/thinking winter has now come to an end? I said to a friend not long before we took off for Queenstown that I expected the day after we landed – 1 September – to be perfectly springlike as I was done with winter. It was, as it happened, but it was seemingly fake spring. Last week we went through winter’s return and I am very hopeful that that’s it!
Regardless, I am done with winter clothes – I’ll just be cold if that’s what it takes. Here are some of my favourite outfits from winter.

I wore this quite a few times during the colder months! The dress is from J.Crew (of course) and is very similar to another one I’d had for over ten years (this one is 3-4 years old). After wearing this dress all winter and not touching the other one even once, I kept this one and donated the other. One great black shirt dress is enough!

I only wore this once and looking back, I’m kind of sad about that?! It’d just about work for a cooler spring day also. The jumper is merino and thankfully, isn’t itchy (may that never change).

I wore this a lot. The cropped cardigan goes with everything, is really warm, and isn’t itchy. Winning outfit.

Love an interesting top and blazer combo!

A cozy choice for what must have been a very cold day – cashmere and pants that aren’t even a little bit cropped. I have honestly spent all winter trying to work out how to style these for cold weather. I like them but I wouldn’t buy them again – I’m old, it’s okay.

I love this jacket and am excited about wearing it more now it’s a bit warmer out! I’m unsure about the shoes with it. These jeans are at the tailors as I type – I needed the waist taken in – and hopefully that might help with proportions for this look in future?

Some country clothes! I keep some basics up there and every so often, swap it out for clothes from the city to keep it fresh in both places.

There’s that dress again, with my tweedy blazer.

Wfh comfort in denim and cotton-cashmere.

Another suit-but-not-really look for work. And a haircut!

This outfit on repeat. Pulled together but very comfortable still.

Must have been a warmer day?! I love this and am mentally making a note to wear it this spring, with different shoes to celebrate the end of boot season.

Dress, boots, coat…ready to head out.

Wfh again I’m guessing – although it might have been an office day, I can be pretty casual at work. I remember when I was at uni I stated my ambition to work only in environments where jeans were okay. I think that has mostly been the case throughout my career! When I get dressed up for work it’s really only for me, because it’s fun.

This dress was an impulse buy a few years ago, and is a great example of why I don’t tend to impulse buy clothes. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I never really loved it. I wore it just once this winter and it was an easy decision to donate it at the end of the season.

Same jeans and shoes as earlier, but going more monochrome with my top, blazer, and accessories. I think this works better.

I realised I hardly ever smile in these morning mirror shots! I am usually happy when I take them though. I love this and I wish I’d worn it more over winter! The skirt is only good in winter really – it’s quite a heavy tweed. Funnily enough, I bought it in Hawaii, of all places, when we were there in 2019. Amelie was asleep in her travel stroller and J.Crew were having one of their 40% off sales. It was kismet.

Country clothes, wet hair. It was really warm this day! An early tease of spring. We were so keen to get out and enjoy it that I didn’t bother drying my hair first.

This is…okay. I wonder if the oversized shirt and lipstick reads more ‘art teacher in a smock’ than ‘city sophisticate’ and will lean harder towards the latter next time I don it.

When in doubt, add a blazer. This might be the most important thing I’ve learned this winter.

I get a lot of wear out of these pants! And you know what? I like them and they suit me. Bring back skinny jeans!

I love this dress! I actually wore this quite a bit. It’s hard to remember when it’s cold and rainy for the 56th day in a row, but I am happy, comfortable and warm enough in most of my dresses if they’re styled right.

I like the shirt better here. Tucked in is good.

I really love this jumper but it’s very hard to style and wear.

Wfh for sure…jeans are fine in the office but I couldn’t bring myself to wear a sweatshirt. Love a quarter-zip situation though.

Staring off into the distance, imagining a world where my bedroom isn’t liberally covered with ski clothing. This must have been the week before we took off to Queenstown, when we spent the whole week packing!

Good dress, good blazer, good boots…enough said. Plus, snowboard bag in the foreground.

Hahaha every day the stuff around me grew! We are now looking at the snowboard bag, a backpack, a puffer jacket, and one of our yeti flasks (which were great on the mountain). Hayden and I were on our way out to see Twisters and I put a lot of effort into wearing my new Anine Bing top, despite it not really being warm enough.

The top without the coat. I love it but struggled with shoes…

All was forgotten when we arrived at the theatre though! I was very happy and excited to be seeing Twisters at the same theatre where I saw Twister in the mid-90s. Check out the carpet…that could well be the same carpet from the mid-90s also (gross). I guess you can go back again, although we followed this up with Tokki (an extraordinarily good upmarket Korean restaurant close to home) rather than throwing fries at each other in Burger King…life just gets better, doesn’t it?
~ some recommendations ~
Listen: I have spent so much of this winter listening to Hozier. I didn’t realise how much I loved him and missed out on tickets to see him live later this year…ah well. Good winter music.
Read: I just finished There’s no Such Thing as Bad Weather, which served as a great reminder of how important it is to spend copious amounts of time outside. We are lucky in that we do tend to have a pretty outdoorsy life and it’s easy for us to live that way, even in winter. If you’re going into winter it’s a good read to keep your motivation up when the weather isn’t so great!
Do: I mentioned a couple of times that I’d donated some clothes. I did this after spring cleaning my wardrobe – some stuff went to the dry cleaners, some to the tailors, and a small bag of things I no longer love got donated to the local SPCA secondhand shop. Everything I donated was a quality brand, still in good condition, was thoroughly cleaned first, and hopefully will be an easy sell for them. I think it’s only polite when donating to follow those guidelines to be sure you’re helping not hindering. My mother used to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and she has some horror stories about what would be donated! Anyway it feels great to be starting the new season with a slimmed-down, tidied-up wardrobe and to feel like I love everything in there again.
